Texas Holdem Betting Structure
Texas Holdem Variations
No Limit Texas Holdem: In no limit texas holdem
games, players can bet or raise any amount of money at any time they like, up
to the amount of chips that they have at the table. The only requirement is
that the raise amount must be at least as much as the previous bet or raise
in the same round. For example, if the first player to act bets $50 then the
second player must raise a minimum of $50 to a total bet of $100. There is no
limit to the number of raises that a player can make in no
limit texas holdem. The only rule being that you cannot raise yourself.
Limit Texas Holdem: Limit holdem means there
is a specific betting limit applied in each game and on each round of betting.
In a limit game of poker, every bet or raise is the same size, as determined
by the rules of the table, and that size doubles for the last two rounds of
betting. For example, if you are playing at a $5/$10 holdem table, every bet
or raise in the first two rounds is $5, and in the last two rounds is $10. There
is also usually a limit to the amount of raises in any round. In Limit Texas
Holdem Poker there is typically a maximun of four bets allowed per player
during any betting round. This includes a (1) bet, (2) raise, (3) re-raise,
and (4) cap. Basically this includes one bet and three raises for each betting
round per player.
Pot Limit Texas Holdem: In this pot limit holdem,
a player can bet up to what is in the pot. The raise amount must be at least
as much as the previous bet or raise in the same round. For example, if the
first player to act bets $50 then the second player must raise a minimum of
$50 to a total bet of $100. The maximum raise is dependent on the size of the
pot. The size of the pot is defined as the total of the active Pot, which can
be either the main pot or the side pot depending on whether anyone has gone
"all-in," plus all bets on the table plus the amount the active player
must first call before raising. For example, if the active pot is $200 and the
first player to act in the round bets $150 and the next player calls $150, the
third player has a maximum eligible total bet of $800. The $800 total is made
up of the $150 call and $650 raise. The $650 max raise portion is equal to the
pot of $200 + first player's $150 + second player's $150 + his own call of $150.
There is no limit to the number of raises that a player can make in pot limit
texas holdem. The only rule being that you cannot raise yourself.
Texas Holdem Blinds
During each round of texas holdem poker, there must be a designated
dealer whose position on the table will determine who starts the betting rounds.
Once the first dealer is chosen, the position will rotate clockwise after each
game of holdem. At the start of a new texas holdem session, usually the first
person to the table is the first dealer, and from then on the dealer rotates
clockwise after each pot is won. Prior to dealing any cards, two players are
required to bet a blind before they ever receive any cards. The amount of the
blind depends on the limit of the betting and is pre-determined. There will
typically be two blinds per game; a big blind and a small blind.
The position of the dealer determines which players will bet the
blinds during each game. The players directly to the left of the dealer, going
clockwise, are the ones who bet the blinds. The order is dealer, small blind,
big blind. After the small and big blinds have been paid, the person to the
immediate left of the big blind starts the first betting round. They have the
option to call the big blind, raise, or fold their hand. The betting will then
continue in a clockwise direction all the way back to the player who paid the
small blind. This player will have already contributed half the big blind, so
they will have the choice to call the remainder of the bet, along with any raises,
or just fold their hand. Next, the player who bet the big blind will have the
option to call, raise, or fold.
In each subsequent betting round of texas
holdem the first bet will start with the small blind-or, if the small blind
has folded, the first person to the left of the small blind-and ends with the
dealer, or the last active player to the right if the dealer has folded. Players
may check, call, raise, or fold up to the set table limits of that game.
